CAR OF THE MILLENIUM ANNOUNCED- Courtesy Automotive News 2 families dominate the awards for Car ofthe CenturyDecember 30, 1999LAS VEGAS - The 20th century has featured hundreds of great vehicles and dozens of outstanding automotive individuals, but you wouldn't have known it when the Car of the Century awards were announced.The Ford and Porsche/Piech families captured all but one of the five first-place awards, including the vehicle award.The Ford Model T was given the Car of the Century award, as 126 jurors from 32 nations - mostly journalists - gave it more votes than they gave thefour other finalists, all of which were from Europe. The winners were: Ford Model T, 742 points; the Mini (all types),617 points; Citroen DS, 567 points;Volkswagen Beetle, 521 points; and Porsche 911, 303 points.Henry Ford was selected Car Entrepreneur of the Century.The Porsche/Piech family, which had two cars among the finalists for Car of the Century, took top honors in two categories. Ferdinand Porsche, father of Volkswagen, was voted Car Engineer of the Century. His grandson,Ferdinand Piech, was named Car Executive of the Century for his work in resurrecting and rebuilding Volkswagen AG.In the final category, Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign was named Car Designer of the Century, from among five finalists, all Italian.Selecting the Car of the Century was a three-year process.
